Meet The Gang
The Wine Gang brings together four of the UK's most renowned wine experts.
Sam Caporn MW
Sam has been in the wine trade for over twenty years and over that time has travelled the world extensively, buying and blending wines. In 2011 she became one of only 380 Masters of Wine around the world and was thrilled to win the prestigious Madame Bollinger Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Practical Paper. Sam has her own wine consultancy business - The Mistress of Wine - and loves tasting and talking about wine to consumers which she does for Aldi as well. Sam is also a wine judge for the International Wine Challenge. When not busy with wine related work activities she can usually be found at home with her husband and young son enjoying a glass there too.
Jo is well known for her 22 years as wine correspondent of The Sunday Times (five in tandem as one of its cookery writers) and for her books on wine and wine and food matching, published in multiple languages that she can’t read. She writes for a variety of publications including The World of Fine Wine and Decanter and is editor of the new consumer magazine Waitrose Drinks, the third drinks magazine she has edited. She was also presenter of BBC R4’s series The Bottle Uncorked. She blogs and recommends wines on joannasimon.com, judges international wine, photography and chocolate competitions (next year, wine and food in Mauritius – it’s a hard life) and gives talks and tastings widely. When she’s not in London or visiting wine regions, she’s usually in a remote part of southwest France, among other things playing at being an entomologist. Anthony is an award-winning wine and sake critic who contributes to publications that include Decanter Magazine, The World of Fine Wine, Financial Times How to Spend It online and The Oxford Companion to Wine. He is co-chair of the Australia panel at the Decanter World Wine Awards and the Sake International Challenge and teaches a sake course at Sake No Hana in London. His new book on Sake is due out at the end of October this year. He was the wine correspondent of the print version of the Independent from start to finish (1986–2016). Anthony lives in South London and in what spare time he has, he likes to cook, drink wines he can’t afford and take pictures.
David is the wine correspondent of The Observer, the deputy editor of The World of Fine Wine, and a columnist at The Wine Merchant, as well as being a regular contributor to titles including The Guardian, Restaurant Magazine, Imbibe and New Zealand's Wine magazine. David is the author of two books, 500 Wines for 100 Occasions and A Little Course in Wine Tasting, and has worked as an editor on titles including The Wine Opus and the Finest Wines Series published by The World of Fine Wine. He has judged at a number of international wine competitions, and is the co-founder and chairman of the annual competition for wines in the UK's independent wine shops, The Wine Merchant Top 50.
